Solar Panel (PV) Electrical Installation Course

Why Solar PV Installation?

Traditional energy supplies are diminishing. The cost of fuel, coupled with an increase in levels of CO2 emissions, means that there is a real need to develop new energy sources. One solution is solar pv: one of the fastest-growing energy sources in the UK.

Solar pv, also known as Solar Photovoltaics, is becoming an increasingly popular way to generate power which is less harmful to the environment. Solar energy is a greener alternative to traditional power sources such as coal, gas or oil and is fast becoming one of the most common services requested of electrical installers and engineers. Our Solar Panel (PV) Installation course can help you become a certified solar pv installer in London.

Funding is available via the Low carbon Building Programme and the Cert scheme. Information about Solar Photovoltaics can be viewed on the STA website.

The purpose of the Stockton on Tees based course and assessment is to give candidates an entry level qualification in Solar photovoltaics. It has been designed for experienced domestic and/or commercial electricians who want to extend their skills to include Solar Photovoltaics.

This training course, offering training for solar pv installers in London, will cover solar panel installations up to 5kWp output.

This solar panel Installation training course covers the predominant systems (grid connected) and includes the following areas:

  • System design and integration
  • Setting to work and commissioning
  • AC & DC theory
  • Cell types and benefits
  • Regulations and Standards
  • Health & Safety considerations
  • Servicing and fault finding
  • External and internal site survey requirements
  • Circuit design
  • Background to the market and Grant and Funding routes (including MCS)

The solar installation course in London is not intended to cover roof access work in detail. As the nature of solar panels generally requires rooftop installation, the course does include risk assessments and legislative requirements of working at height.

Assessment

The course will be assessed by a multiple choice examination and practical assessment.

Certification

On successful completion of this course you will receive a qualification depending on which option you took. It will either be;

  • A Logic Certificate of Competence in Solar PV Installation and a Logic accredited ID card, or
  • A Certificate for the Design and Verification of Solar PV.

Course Length

The course is three days long in total and is held in Watford at our electrical training centre in London.

Suitability

This course can be studied by anyone with an interest in Solar PV installation. However, those without prior qualifications receive a different qualification to experienced and fully-qualified electricians.

Progression & Development

All qualified electricians holding 17th Edition and Part P will be able to register for MCS accreditation. Those without electrical qualifications would be able to move on to study further electrical courses.

Pre-requisites

If You Want To Apply For MCS Accreditation:

You must be working as an electrician and have good electrical skills and experience. You will need to hold both a 17th Edition qualification and a Part P qualification. This means that once completed you will be able to approach MCS for accreditation and be able to start working as a PV installer.

If You Do Not Have These Electrical Qualifications:

Don’t worry, you can still do the Solar PV course. You will complete the same training as the qualified electrician but would have a different qualification at the end.

You will not be able to approach MCS for accreditation with this option; instead you would receive a certificate for the Design and Verification of Solar PV.

This qualification option, for those without electrical qualifications, means that you will not be permitted to carry out the actual electrical installation.

It has been designed to be most useful to those requiring the ability to design and verify only, including site managers, surveyors and designers.

Essential Reading

There is no essential reading for the solar course however, it is essential that candidates are experienced in the design and installation of domestic single phase circuits and issuing the appropriate documentation (electrical).
