Electrical training can be a daunting thought and we fully understand that you may have lots of questions to ask. Our Electrician Frequently Asked Questions section has been built up to answer questions you might have. If your question about electrical training isn’t answered here, then please do not hesitate in contacting us or give us a call on 0845 365 1086.
Q) Are there genuine prospects in the electrical industry?
A) Job prospects are very good for those who work hard and apply themselves. Lately, the Government have planned to build more houses so the demand is likely to always be there.
Q) Why is there such a shortage of electricians?
A) Traditional apprenticeships have declined as well as new industry sectors offering competition. Electrical and other constructions skills are declining as more people look for a job within the IT or the service industry. There is also a wide range of electricians who are reaching retiring age, meaning that more people are leaving the electrical trade than are entering it.
Q) Can you train me from scratch?
A) We offer Domestic Electrical Installer Training packages which allow you to start a new career or retrain. These courses require no previous knowledge of electrics and offer flexible training dates to choose from.
Q) What is a Domestic Electrical Installer?
A) A Domestic Electrical Installer is qualified to carry out work in domestic properties only. An electrician often holds an NVQ training qualification that allows them to work on commercial and industrial premises.
Q) How do you support me on my electrical training course?
A) The Tutor is your main contact during electrical training and, as such, his input reflects how well you learn. We only consider the best Tutors who can empathise with students whilst conducting professional level electrical training. We will always try to answer your questions by telephone promptly and within 24 hours Monday to Friday by e- mail.
Q) Do you supply all materials for the electrical course?
A) Yes we do, but you are required to bring the essential reading material. Just wear casual clothing with appropriate footwear for practical training
Q) What employment route do you recommend after my electrical training?
A) You may obtain work experience with an electrical contractor before considering self employment. This is to gain valuable "real life" work experience alongside an experienced electrician.
Q) Can I become self employed after your training package?
A) Yes you can, and after you have sat a Domestic Electrical Installer Training package with us you will be able to enrol on a Competent Person scheme such as NICEIC or any other.
Self employment can be very rewarding for dedicated electricians. If you are currently employed, you can take on small private jobs through friends and family during evenings and weekends. This way you gain extra experience, earn money and build up a customer base before leaving paid employment to set up your own business. It is important that you have a Public Liability Insurance policy in place so everyone is properly insured.
Q) What about VAT registration?
A) We would usually recommend electricians are VAT registered if they set up their own business. There is nothing to worry about, and it is of huge benefit to law abiding businesses as you can offset your VAT against your business costs.
Adding VAT to a customer’s bill will not usually hinder your ability to win work and it creates a professional image for you. You do not have to wait until you reach the VAT threshold to register. Furthermore, VAT can be backdated for up to 3 years for capital expenditure e.g. computers and tools you may have brought.
Q) How do I book myself on to an electrical training course?
A) Simply call us on 0845 365 1086 or book online.
Q) What if I don't have all of the funds to pay for an electrical course?
A) Funding options are available through providers such as Business Link or ELCAS if you are in the services. Alternatively call us on 0845 365 1086 to discuss funding options.
Q) Why should I choose you for my electrical training?
A) We always give you all the facts, will never mislead you and consider our electrical training and support the best route to learning new skills. We firmly believe in the welfare of all new entrants and hope to build a long term relationship with you.
