The 17th Edition course in Stockton on Tees on Teesside, North East England, teaches candidates all aspects of 17th Edition training to the new standard incorporating amendment one.
The 17th Edition first amendment was published in July 2011 and comes into force from January 2012. This means that the old 17th Edition qualification will be retired from the end of 2011 and will no longer be current from this date.
Anyone who needs 17th Edition as part of their main trade will need to update their qualification to the 2382-12 17th Edition.
As a classroom, theory based route, the 17th Edition course North East does not contain any practical learning elements. It does, however, teach candidates all aspects of the previous 17th Edition course but now includes the new sections laid out in the update, amendment one. These new additions refer to the following new sections:
New Section 444 - Measures against Electromagnetic disturbances: Any equipment such as lifts, transformers and fluorescent lighting can cause electromagnetic disturbances and this interference can damage IT equipment, components and circuits. This new section suggests recommendations to avoid and reduce electromagnetic disturbances.
New Section 534 - Devices for protection against overvoltage (surge protection): Transient voltages can have a peak value of 6kV. Lightning strike and electrical switching can give transient overvoltages to installations. This new section requires the installation of SPDs to limit transient overvoltages and divert surge current away from sensitive equipment.
New Section 710 - Medical locations: Strict measures are needed to ensure the safety of medical patients especially where they are likely to be subjected to the application of medical electrical equipment.
New Section 729 - Operating or maintenance gangways: Regulation 15 of the Electricity at Work Act requires working space, access and lighting to be correctly and adequately provided where work is being carried out. This new section includes requirements for gangway width, access, emergency access and emergency evacuation.
Appendix Six - Model forms for certification and reporting: Periodic inspection and testing is required because electrical installations can deteriorate over time. As legislation states that electrical installations should be maintained, periodic inspection and testing of installations is required.
The examination for the 17th Edition course is two hours long and takes place on the third day of the course.
All those successfully completing 17th Edition training will receive a certificate to prove their competency and skill in completing work to the current 17th Edition standards including amendment 1.
The full length of the 17th Edition Electrician’s course is three days.
All those who, currently, can only work if they hold a 17th Edition qualification or need 17th Edition training to further their career, must update their skills to ensure they can continue to work to current regulation standards.
All learners must be interested in the subject matter and have a basic knowledge of electrics, and any previous electrical training would be advantageous.
All those who are serious about wanting to forge a career in electrics will need to complete 17th Edition training for almost all electrical career routes. It also enables, those who wish it, to move on to further higher level qualifications and training.
All those completing the 17th Edition course North East should read and bring on the day a current copy of the 17th Edition Wiring Regulations incorporating amendment 1.
